.....Schoolin' em Since 1980

In the song, “Cleva”, written by Erykah Badu, the artist describes her physical and mental state. I identify with this song because I identify with the writer with whom I share commonalities. We both were born in the southern region of the United States, we both are former teachers, and we both have an affinity for “afro centric” and eclectic hairstyles and fashion amongst other things. Furthermore, we both consider ourselves to be clever individuals. In the song Ms. Badu explains that even though her body is not in the best of shape and her appearance may not be up to par, she has recognized other aspects of herself, such as her clever rhyming skills, that overshadow these “deficiencies”. I too share Ms. Baud’s body conscious sensibility, and although I am not musically inclined, my cleverness does not go unnoticed, most of the time anyway. My writing style, sense of humor and taste in fashion are all personal characteristics that have been praised by others at one point or another. That said, just as Ms. Badu states, “but why come I’m the last to know”, I find myself doubting my abilities to do the things that make me who I am. I hate to admit that no matter how clever or “fly” I may appear on the outside, inside I still often struggle with the common insecurities that most 20 something women experience. However, through growth and self-discovery I hope to become the confident and clever woman I portray outside, inside as well. Only then can I sing along with Ms. Badu proclaiming, “I’m alright with me”, and truly mean it.
